Celebrating Diversity: Ogoh-Ogoh Parade in Mataram Marks Special Religious Occasions

Lombok Zone – The spirit of tolerance and diversity was vividly showcased in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) as thousands of Hindu Dharma followers participated in the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. This event welcomed the Nyepi Day and the Saka New Year, coinciding beautifully with the holy month of Ramadan this year.

Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, alongside Hj. Sinta Agathia M Iqbal, the head of NTB’s TP. PKK, and Mataram Mayor H. Mohan Roliskana, expressed their admiration for the dedication and creativity displayed by the Hindu community in putting together this cultural event. He noted that the Ogoh-Ogoh creations were exceptional works of art, meticulously crafted to perfection.

“Together with the Mayor of Mataram, we are amazed at how the Hindu Dharma community expresses their artistic talents and seriousness. None of the Ogoh-Ogoh looked subpar; they were all prepared with great care,” he commented during his visit on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

This year’s celebration was notably special as two significant religious holidays, Nyepi for Hindus and Idul Fitri for Muslims, occurred in such close proximity. The Governor referred to this coincidence as a “remarkable blessing,” highlighting that approximately 99 percent of the NTB population is collectively engaged in a process of self-purification.

“With nearly 96 percent of the NTB population being Muslim and about 3 percent Hindu, this means 99 percent of our community is undergoing purification together. This is a good sign that peace, comfort, and order will always accompany us,” he added.

He also emphasized to the press that this event serves as a tangible demonstration to the international community of NTB’s maturity in religious practices and its strong roots of tolerance that have been nurtured for centuries.

The orderly conduct of the event is hoped to set a new standard for future celebrations, reinforcing NTB’s reputation as a harmonious province amidst diversity.

70 Food Packages Distributed to Vulnerable Communities in Mataram

Lombok Zone – In Mataram, 70 food packages were distributed to vulnerable groups, underscoring the collaborative efforts of the Social Family Coordination Agency (LKKS) of West Nusa Tenggara and the Consulate General of China in Denpasar.

During the event held on March 16, 2026, Sinta Agathia Iqbal, the head of LKKS NTB, expressed that the assistance symbolizes the government’s love and concern for those in need. She emphasized that this initiative is a testament to the broader support available to the community.

“This means you are not alone; many care for you, including our Chinese friends,” Bunda Sinta stated while handing over the aid at the LKKS auditorium. She made it a point to express her gratitude to the LKKS management for their dedication to organizing this event.

Bunda Sinta concluded her remarks with encouragement, reminding everyone that even after Eid al-Fitr, there remains much work to be done. “Thank you to all LKKS leaders; let’s keep our spirits high,” she added.

Meanwhile, Zhang Zhiseng, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, expressed his appreciation for the initiative led by LKKS NTB. He highlighted the historical ties between China and Indonesia, noting that these connections predated European colonization.

Zheng praised NTB’s religious harmony, acknowledging the province’s majority Muslim population. “With 20 million Muslims in China, NTB serves as a model for tolerance,” he remarked.

Prior to the distribution, Andi Purna Henderi, the daily chair of LKKS NTB, reported that this sharing program had commenced on the 11th of Ramadan, emphasizing that such activities are not mere formalities but a duty of the LKKS. “Today marks the conclusion of our efforts. We are grateful for the unexpected support from the Chinese Consulate,” he said.

The event also included a communal iftar, where LKKS NTB officials and beneficiaries shared a meal together.

  • Mataram Government Urges Against Panic Buying During Ramadan

Mataram Government Urges Against Panic Buying During Ramadan

Lombok Zone – As Ramadan approaches in 2026, the Mataram City Government, through its Trade Office (Disdag), is urging citizens to avoid panic buying. This advisory comes in light of rising prices for essential goods in local markets, particularly chili peppers, which have surged to Rp170,000 per kilogram.

Irwan Harimansyah, the head of Disdag Mataram, reassured residents that the supply of basic goods remains stable and adequate.

“We encourage the community to shop based on their actual needs and resist the urge to over-purchase. The recent price hikes are still subject to fluctuations,” he stated on Monday, February 23, 2026.

According to Harimansyah, the sharp increase in chili prices is primarily due to high demand not being met by local supply in Mataram. Although there are sufficient stocks from surrounding areas, such as West Lombok and East Lombok, distribution has not been optimized.

“We are planning to bring in additional supplies from producing regions outside of NTB, including Bali and Java,” he added.

In addition to chili peppers, other commodities have also seen price increases. Beef is now priced between Rp145,000 and Rp150,000 per kilogram, up from the normal range of Rp125,000 to Rp135,000. Chicken prices have risen to Rp42,000–Rp44,000 per kilogram, while the price of medium-sized eggs has gone from Rp58,000 to Rp60,000 per tray. On the other hand, the prices for large and curly chili peppers have remained stable at around Rp30,000 per kilogram.

To curb further price hikes that could strain consumers, the Disdag of Mataram is enhancing coordination with the Provincial Trade Office, Bulog, Bank Indonesia, distributors, and the Food Task Force.

“The government is also preparing for community markets, affordable markets, and the Cheap Food Movement (GPM) as intervention measures to ensure that the prices and supply of essential goods remain controlled throughout Ramadan,” he explained.

  • Mataram Enhances Waste Management with New Incinerator Initiative

Mataram Enhances Waste Management with New Incinerator Initiative

In an effort to improve waste management and reduce reliance on the Kebon Kongok landfill, the Mayor of Mataram, H. Mohan Roliskana, accompanied by the Head of the Environment Agency, H. Nizar Deni Cahyadi, and the Head of Waste Management at Mataram’s Environment Agency, Vidi Partisan Yuris Gamanjaya, inspected the use of an incinerator at the Sandubaya Temporary Waste Disposal Site on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. This initiative underscores the Mataram City Government’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions for waste management.

The incinerator, donated by the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government and originating from South Korea, has the capacity to burn 5 tons of waste every 8 hours, or one shift. Plans are underway to operate the machine in two shifts daily, allowing it to process up to 10 tons of waste per day.

“This tool is very helpful and has been tested. It will continue to be trialed until it reaches its maximum capacity of 10 tons per day,” the mayor remarked during the trial process.

The introduction of this incinerator is seen as a solution to decrease dependency on the limited Kebon Kongoq landfill and to cut operational costs of dump trucks by approximately 76 million rupiah annually. At the Sandubaya site, three incinerator units are expected to operate. These include one unit from the H Moh Ruslan Hospital, and Mataram plans to purchase an additional unit with the same capacity.

“In total, there will be three machines at this site, managing 30 tons daily. Combined with the Sandubaya TPST, which processes 50 tons daily, we can handle 80 tons of the 200 tons generated daily by Mataram,” he explained.

The use of these incinerators has been approved by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, confirming they meet air quality standards. In the future, the Mataram City Government plans to purchase a larger incinerator with a 100-ton capacity and aims to involve citizens in waste management through the ‘Tempah Dedoro Organik’ program, encouraging them to participate in organic waste management from the source to the end.

  • Bros Gerbang Sangkareang: A New Cultural Icon for Mataram

Bros Gerbang Sangkareang: A New Cultural Icon for Mataram

The 32nd anniversary of Mataram was marked by a significant cultural milestone with the official recognition of the Bros Gerbang Sangkareang. The copyright certificate for this symbolic brooch was presented to Hj. Kinnastri Mohan Roliskana, Chair of the TP PKK and Dekranasda, by I Gusti Putu Milawati, the Head of the NTB Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

This brooch is not merely a piece of jewelry but a representation of Mataram’s identity, rich with philosophical significance. Inspired by the Sangkareang Gate at the Sangkareang Square—an iconic public space in Mataram—it embodies the values of openness, unity, and community spirit.

    The Symbolism of the Brooch

The gate symbolizes an entryway to the future, reflecting Mataram’s openness to change, modernity, and collaboration with the wider world. Sangkareang Square, as a central public area, represents a hub of community activity where people from all walks of life can gather freely. The brooch artistically captures these elements, emphasizing the role of women in driving local creativity, economic growth, and cultural heritage through organizations like Dekranasda and TP PKK.

The transfer of copyright to the Chair of TP PKK and Dekranasda underscores the brooch’s significance as more than just an aesthetic piece. It is a testament to Mataram’s cultural heritage, carrying both philosophical meaning and legal recognition. This move ensures that the brooch will be preserved, developed, and passed down as an official symbol of the city.
